What Do Coffee and Family History Have in Common?

Let’s talk about two of my favourite things: coffee and family history. Now, you might be wondering what on earth these two have in common. I mean, one is a steaming cup of liquid gold that keeps us going, and the other is, well, a deep dive into old records and dusty family trees. But hear me out—they’re more alike than you think!

An elegant cup sits on a saucer in the foreground with a blurred cityscape in the background

1. It’s All About the Grind

You know how finding the perfect coffee blend takes time? You’ve got to try different beans, grind sizes, and brewing methods until you hit that sweet spot. Well, family history is the same. You’ve got to dig through different sources—census records, birth certificates, or Aunt Marge’s scribbled notes from 1993—until you find that one detail that brings all your ancestors together. It’s a grind, but when you finally get that perfect cup (or, in this case, connection), it’s oh-so-satisfying.

2. It Keeps You Up at Night

Have you ever told yourself, “Just one more cup” at 10 p.m. and suddenly found yourself wide awake at 2 a.m.? Family history research does the same thing. You think, “I’ll just check this one more document,” and the next thing you know, it’s 3 a.m. and you’re deep in a rabbit hole, trying to figure out if your great-great-grandfather really changed his name or if the records are just messing with you. Sleep is optional when you’re fuelled by either caffeine or curiosity (or both!).

3. The Perfect Blend Takes Time

A good cup of coffee isn’t rushed. You let it brew, letting the flavours develop to create something rich and satisfying. Family history is no different. You can’t rush the process, because each discovery—no matter how small—adds a new layer of depth to your story. Whether you’re sifting through archives or scrolling through old photos, every little detail contributes to the unique “blend” that is your family tree.

4. Everyone Has Their Own Style

Some people like a strong, black espresso; others prefer a creamy latte with a sprinkle of cinnamon. In genealogy, some folks are all about the facts—dates, places, occupations—while others, like me, love the stories, the “why” behind the “who.” There’s no right or wrong way to enjoy coffee or research your family history. It’s all about finding what works for you!

5. It Brings People Together

Coffee has a way of bringing people to the table, whether it’s for a catch-up with friends or a family gathering. And family history does the same. Researching your roots can spark conversations with relatives you haven’t spoken to in years, or even connect you with long-lost cousins you didn’t know you had. There’s something about discovering shared history that makes everyone want to come together, just like a good brew.

6. The Stories Behind the Beans

Every cup of coffee has a story behind it—where the beans were grown, who picked them, and how they ended up in your local café. Family history is full of stories too—stories of migration, hard work, love, loss, and resilience. It’s these stories that make us who we are, just like the journey of a coffee bean influences its final flavour.

7. It’s Addictive

Let’s be honest: once you start, it’s hard to stop. Whether it’s that first sip of a delicious flat white or the thrill of finding a new ancestor, you get hooked. Both coffee and genealogy have a way of pulling you in, and before you know it, you’re fully obsessed—either with brewing the perfect cup or unearthing every last detail about your great-uncle’s mysterious life.

So, the next time you sit down with a cup of coffee and think about your family history, remember—they’ve got more in common than you might realise! And who knows? Maybe that next sip will fuel your biggest breakthrough yet.

Happy researching (and sipping)!
